Short answer
Meta AI only reads messages that mention @Meta AI or that someone shares with it, but Meta may use those messages to improve its AI. If you switch on Meta's Business AI agent, Meta receives the chats where it is active, so treat it like any outside vendor handling customer data.
What Meta AI in WhatsApp is, and is it in Singapore?
Meta AI is Meta's chatbot, built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook. In WhatsApp it shows up as a blue-ring icon, a chat of its own and the option to type @Meta AI inside other chats. Meta rolled it out in Singapore in April 2024, among a dozen English-speaking markets.
Some features still vary by device and account. WhatsApp's help pages note that Meta AI and some experiences are only available in limited countries and may not have reached every user, even where others have it.
| Feature | Who uses it | What Meta receives |
|---|---|---|
| Meta AI chat | Staff or customers, on their own phones | Everything typed or sent in that chat |
| @Meta AI in a group | Any group member | Messages that mention @Meta AI, and replies that do |
| Ask Meta AI about a message | Any chat member | The message they chose to share |
| Business AI / Meta Business Agent | Your business, in the Business app | Chats where the agent is connected |
What Meta AI can read in your work chats
Meta's line is consistent across its pages. WhatsApp's help article on information used by Meta AI says Meta can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with it, and that other personal messages stay end-to-end encrypted.
The risk is the sharing part. If a staff member forwards a customer's message to Meta AI to draft a reply, or tags @Meta AI in a group to summarise a discussion, that content goes to Meta. Meta's privacy post on its generative AI features, updated in November 2025, says it may train its AI on messages people choose to share with its AI features, and may pass certain questions to partners such as search providers.
The same help page adds that Meta AI may use information from profiles added to your Meta Account, such as Facebook or Instagram, to personalise replies.
Settings to turn on for staff WhatsApp chats
You cannot uninstall Meta AI from WhatsApp, but you can limit what reaches it. These steps take a few minutes per chat.
Turn on Advanced Chat Privacy for sensitive groups
Tap the chat name, then Advanced Chat Privacy. WhatsApp's announcement says it blocks others from exporting the chat, auto-downloading media and using its messages for AI features.
Keep customer data out of Meta AI chats
Tell staff not to paste NRIC numbers, addresses, health details or contracts into Meta AI, or forward them to it. Use an approved AI tool with business terms instead.
Delete what was shared by mistake
Meta's privacy post says you can type /reset-ai in a Meta AI chat to delete your AI messages, and WhatsApp lets you request deletion of information shared with Meta AI.
Check Meta Account links
If WhatsApp was added to a Meta Account (formerly Accounts Center), Meta AI can draw on linked Facebook and Instagram profiles. Remove the link on work phones if you do not need it.
Write it into your AI policy
Add a line on Meta AI to your staff AI rules. Our guide to AI training opt-out settings covers the equivalent settings in ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot.
Meta's Business AI agent in the WhatsApp Business app
Separate from the consumer chatbot, Meta offers an AI agent that replies to customers for you. WhatsApp's help pages call it Business AI or Meta Business Agent; it is part of the paid Meta One subscription, and Meta says availability varies by region and account.
Per WhatsApp's help article on Business AI, the agent can answer questions on hours, location, products, prices, discounts, payment and shipping, using your catalogue and business details. Customers see a notice in the chat that AI from Meta receives chats to improve AI quality and generate messages for the business, and AI-written messages are labelled.
Points in its favour
- No API, provider or developer needed
- Customers are told they are chatting with AI
- Customers can ask for a person and the chat is handed to your team
- Pauses when you reply manually
Points to weigh
- Meta keeps collecting chats to improve its AI even when you mute it
- Only deleting the agent stops that sharing
- Answers can be wrong about prices or stock if your catalogue is stale
- Paid subscription and per-region availability
On the API side, Meta now charges for its Business Agent per token, which it says works out to roughly US$0.04 to US$0.05 a message, per its pricing page as of October 2026. Our guide to WhatsApp chatbot options in Singapore compares it with provider bots.
PDPA points for Meta AI and AI agents
This is general information, not legal advice. Under Singapore's PDPA, your business is responsible for personal data in your possession or under your control, including data you pass to a vendor.
- Staff sharing customer data with Meta AI is a disclosure to a third party for a purpose the customer may not have agreed to. Treat it as a policy breach, not a convenience.
- Using Meta's Business AI agent means Meta processes customer chats. Mention AI-assisted replies and Meta's role in your privacy notice, and check Meta's business terms before you switch it on.
- Sensitive sectors such as clinics, financial advisers and tuition centres for children should keep identifiable details out of AI chats, or not use the agent at all.
- Marketing sent by an AI agent still needs consent under the PDPA's Do Not Call rules; see PDPC's DNC guide.
If you would rather keep customer data off Meta's AI, use the WhatsApp Business Platform with your own AI provider. Our guide to WhatsApp Business API costs explains that route.

Frequently asked questions
Not ordinary chats. WhatsApp says personal messages stay end-to-end encrypted and Meta can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with it. If you connect Meta's Business AI agent, Meta receives the chats where the agent is active, including to improve its AI.
There is no switch to remove it. You can avoid using it, and turn on Advanced Chat Privacy for individual chats and groups, which stops members using that chat's messages with AI features and blocks exports. You can also delete Meta AI chats and request deletion of information you shared.
Meta says it does not train on private messages with friends and family unless someone in the chat chooses to share them with its AI. A November 2025 update to its privacy post says it may train on messages people share with its AI features. Business AI chats are also used to improve AI at Meta.
That depends on how you use it. Your business stays responsible for customer data it passes to Meta. Tell customers in your privacy notice that AI from Meta may reply, keep sensitive data out, and check Meta's business terms. This is general information, not legal advice.
Yes. Meta included Singapore when it expanded Meta AI in April 2024. Some newer features and Meta's Business AI agent roll out by region, device and account, so a feature described online may not appear in your app yet. Check the Tools tab in the WhatsApp Business app.
