What the writing leaderboards show (October 2026)
Arena (formerly LMArena) ranks models from blind head-to-head votes: people see two anonymous answers and pick the better one. It publishes separate category boards, including creative writing and instruction following, which are the closest public proxies for writing quality.
| Leaderboard (snapshot date) | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Highest OpenAI entry listed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Arena creative writing (15 Oct 2026) | Claude Opus 5.5 (High), 1519 | Gemini 4 Argon (High), 1516 | Claude Fable 5 (High), 1501 | GPT-5.5 Instant, 32nd, 1455 |
| Arena instruction following (8 Oct 2026) | Gemini 4 Argon (High), 1529 | Claude Opus 5.5 (High), 1519 | Claude Opus 4.6 (High), 1513 | Not in top 3 |
| Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index (19 Oct 2026) | Claude Opus 5.5 (max), 58 | Claude Sonnet 5.5 (max), 56 | Claude Opus 5.5 (xhigh), 56 | GPT-6 Astra (max), 53 |
Read these with care. Claude Opus 5.5's creative writing score had a margin of plus or minus 15 from under 2,000 votes, so its lead over Gemini 4 Argon is not decisive. 'Creative writing' prompts on Arena include stories and poems, not only business copy. And the Artificial Analysis index measures reasoning, coding and knowledge, not prose. Our explainer on LLM benchmarks such as LMArena and SWE-bench covers what each measures.
Tone, length and brand voice controls
For business writing, the ability to set your house style once matters more than a few leaderboard points. Both tools offer it in different ways.
- Claude Styles: Anthropic's styles help article lists preset styles (Normal, Concise, Formal and Explanatory) and custom styles. You can upload or paste writing samples and Claude generates a matching style, which you can then edit.
- ChatGPT personality: OpenAI's personality article describes a Base style and tone setting with options such as Default, Professional, Efficient, Friendly and Candid. OpenAI notes that for drafts like emails, ChatGPT matches tone to your instructions and context rather than strictly to the personality.
- ChatGPT custom instructions: OpenAI's custom instructions article allows up to 5,000 characters on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans, applied across all chats.
- Projects in both: keep a style guide, product facts and good past examples in a project so every draft starts from the same brief.
Business plan prices and seats
| Plan | Standard seat | Heavier-use seat | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro (individual) | US$17/mo annual (US$200 up front), US$20 monthly | Max from US$100/mo | 1 user |
| Claude Team | US$20/seat/mo annual, US$25 monthly | Premium seat US$100/mo annual | 2 users, up to 150 |
| ChatGPT Business | US$20/user/mo annual, US$25 monthly | Premium seat US$100/mo annual, US$125 monthly | 2 seats |
Sources: Claude pricing and OpenAI's ChatGPT Business billing article. For a team of five on annual billing, either costs about US$100 a month. Claude's pricing page states no model training on your content by default for Team; personal plans show training as opt-out, so use a business plan for company material.
Run your own 30-minute writing test
Leaderboards tell you which model strangers preferred on their prompts. Your decision should rest on your prompts. This test takes about half an hour with a free or trial account on each.
Prepare the same brief for both
Paste your one-page style brief into each tool's custom instructions or style settings, so the comparison is fair.
Task 1: a difficult customer reply
Paste a real (anonymised) complaint and ask for a firm but polite reply under 150 words that offers one remedy.
Task 2: a quotation cover email
Give the job details and price and ask for a short email that explains scope, exclusions and validity.
Task 3: a service page for your website
Ask for 300 words on one service for Singapore customers, with a clear call to action and no hype.
Task 4: a policy rewrite in plain English
Paste a page of your staff policy or terms and ask for a plain-English version that keeps every obligation.
Task 5: three social posts
Ask for LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram versions of one announcement, each in the right length and tone.
Score blind, then decide
Copy outputs into a document without labels, have two colleagues rank them on accuracy, tone and editing needed, then reveal which tool wrote which.
Our ChatGPT prompts for small business guide has ready-made prompts you can reuse for this test, and they work in Claude too.
Accuracy, privacy and what not to paste
Both models can state wrong facts fluently: a price, a regulation, a date. For anything a customer or regulator will read, check facts against your own sources before sending.
Safe AI writing checklist for staff
Do it yourself or get help?
Most small teams can pick a tool with the 30-minute test and roll it out with a short style brief. Where businesses struggle is consistency and safety: staff using personal accounts, pasting customer data, or sending AI drafts unchecked.
Our Security Awareness Training (S$390) sets up short monthly lessons on phishing and Singapore scams with completion tracking. Pair it with the checklist above as your staff AI-use rule, so writing help does not become a data leak.

No. This guide uses published third-party rankings from Arena and Artificial Analysis, with their snapshot dates, plus vendor documentation and pricing pages. Because results depend heavily on the prompt and the reader, we recommend running the five-task test in this guide with your own material before you choose.
It is, with care. Use a business plan that does not train on your content by default, avoid pasting sensitive personal data, and check any facts, prices or commitments before sending. Keep a person responsible for the final version, especially for complaints, contracts and anything with legal or financial consequences.
