Short answer
Consumer Grok (free and personal plans, and Grok inside X) may use your prompts to train models unless you turn off Improve the model, and its terms give the company broad rights over your inputs. Grok Teams and Enterprise do not train on business data by default. Use only a business plan for work data.
Who makes Grok, and which terms apply
Grok's legal pages on x.ai now name the company as SpaceXAI LLC, branded SpaceXSI, a US company and separate from X Corp. There are three ways to use Grok, each with different terms:
| How Grok is used | Terms that apply | Training on your content |
|---|---|---|
| Grok app or grok.com, free or personal plan | Consumer Terms of Service and Privacy Policy | Possible, unless you turn off Improve the model |
| Grok inside X | X Terms of Service and X Privacy Policy | Controlled through X's settings |
| Grok Teams, Enterprise or the API | Enterprise Terms of Service and Data Processing Addendum | Not used by default |
So the question "is Grok safe?" really means "is the version my staff use covered by business terms?" For most staff signing in with a personal account, the answer is no.
What consumer Grok does with your prompts
Grok's consumer FAQ says it may use your content and interactions, such as prompts, searches and other material you submit, along with Grok's responses, to train its models. It adds that a limited number of authorised staff may review conversations, for example to improve model performance or investigate misuse.
The consumer terms go further. By submitting inputs, you grant the company an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free right to use, copy, store, modify and process them. That is broad for anything confidential.
Turn off Improve the model
In the Grok app, go to Settings, then Data Controls, and deselect Improve the model. The same control exists on grok.com.
Use Private Chat for anything sensitive
Tap the ghost icon at the top right. Grok says Private Chat conversations are not used for training and are deleted from its systems within 30 days.
Delete old conversations
The privacy policy says deleted conversations, or a deleted account, are removed within 30 days unless kept for legal, compliance or safety reasons.
Grok Teams and Enterprise: what changes
Grok's enterprise FAQ says it does not use business data, including prompts and outputs, to train its models. You own inputs and outputs. If you submit personal data, its Data Processing Addendum applies automatically. Inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days unless otherwise agreed in writing or retained because they were flagged for possible policy breaches.
One caveat: the same FAQ says that in some cases the company may offer free credits in exchange for permission to train on your business data. Read any credit offer carefully before accepting.
- Teams: from US$30 per user a month, according to Grok's pricing page, with mixed seat types and SCIM seat management.
- Enterprise: custom pricing, invoicing and advanced security; the business page lists SOC 2 Type II, SSO and SCIM.
- Work email link: the consumer terms say that if staff sign up with a work email, their account may be linked to the organisation's Grok Enterprise subscription and managed by its admin.
How Grok ranks on independent benchmarks
We have not run our own tests. On the Artificial Analysis leaderboard, checked on 19 October 2026, Grok 4.7 at its highest setting scored 46 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, against 58 for the top model, Claude Opus 5.5. That places Grok in the capable group but below the leading models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google on that index.
Grok's distinctive feature is real-time search of public X posts alongside the web. For businesses that monitor social media trends, that can be useful. For drafting, summarising and analysis, the main business plans from other vendors score as well or better on published benchmarks.
Grok vs other AI tools for business use
Grok may suit you if
- You need live insight from public X posts
- You will buy Teams or Enterprise, not personal plans
- Your use is marketing research with no personal data
Another tool may suit you better if
- You already pay for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace
- You need the highest benchmark scores for analysis
- You want one approved tool with existing admin controls
If you use Microsoft 365, Copilot Chat signed in with work accounts is included at no extra cost and is covered by Microsoft's data protection terms. Our guide to AI training opt-out settings shows the equivalent switches in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and our DeepSeek and Qwen safety guide applies the same tests to Chinese models.
Checklist: should your business allow Grok?
Grok decision checklist
Singapore's PDPA holds your business responsible for personal data you pass to a service provider. Our ChatGPT at work policy guide includes a template AI policy that works for any tool. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do it yourself or get help?
Deciding on Grok is mainly a policy question: which version, for what work, with which settings. Writing the rule takes an afternoon; getting staff to follow it takes training.
Our Security Awareness Training (S$390) covers safe AI use alongside phishing and scams, including what never to paste into a chatbot and how to check which account you are signed in with.
Frequently asked questions
On consumer plans, yes, it may. Grok's consumer FAQ says prompts, searches and responses may be used to train its models unless you turn off Improve the model in Data Controls. Private Chat conversations are not used for training. Business and enterprise customer content is not used to improve the models by default.
The model is related, but the terms are not. Grok used inside X is governed by X's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and its training settings are managed in X's own settings. The Grok app and grok.com use the consumer terms on x.ai, and business plans use the Enterprise Terms.
As of October 2026, Grok's pricing page lists Teams from US$30 per user per month, with mixed seat types and SCIM seat management, and Enterprise at custom pricing with invoicing. Personal plans range from free to US$200 a month but are not covered by the Enterprise Terms and are not suitable for business data.
For consumer users, Private Chat conversations and deleted conversations are removed within 30 days unless needed for legal, compliance or safety reasons. For business customers, inputs and outputs are deleted within 30 days unless agreed otherwise in writing or flagged as potentially breaching the terms.
Only with care and only on a business plan covered by a data processing agreement. Under the PDPA your organisation remains responsible for personal data passed to a service provider. Consumer Grok gives the company broad rights over inputs and gives you no admin control, so it is not suitable for customer data.
