Short answer
Give the AI real product facts (materials, sizes, origin, use) and your customer, then edit every draft. Use Shopify's built-in generator for a few products, or a chatbot plus a product CSV import for many. Never let AI invent specs, origin or health claims, and keep each description specific to the product.
Two workflows: built-in AI or bulk with a chatbot
Shopify's built-in generator
A few products- Click the generate icon in the product description box
- Write a prompt with features, keywords and tone
- Text goes straight into the description to edit and save
- Works in any language Shopify supports
Best for: New products added one at a time, or rewriting a few key pages.
Chatbot plus CSV import
Dozens or hundreds- Export products to CSV
- Generate drafts from a spreadsheet of product facts
- Review in the spreadsheet, then import to update
- Same method works for WooCommerce and others
Best for: Launching a catalogue, or replacing supplier copy across many products.
Shopify's help page on generating product descriptions says to give at least a product title and two product features or keywords, and that more detail gives more accurate and unique results. Our Shopify Magic and Sidekick review covers Shopify's other AI tools.
Step by step: bulk descriptions via CSV
Build a facts sheet first
One row per product: title, URL handle, product type, materials, dimensions or sizes, country of origin, care instructions, who it suits, and anything a customer asks before buying. Get facts from the supplier spec sheet, not the AI.
Write one prompt with your style rules
Include your brand voice, length, structure (short intro, benefit bullets, specs) and a rule: 'Use only the facts in this row. If a fact is missing, leave it out.'
Generate in small batches
Run 20 to 30 products at a time so you can spot repeated phrases and errors before they spread.
Review against the facts sheet
Check every number, material and claim. Delete filler and swap repeated opening lines.
Import and spot-check
Shopify's product CSV guide says updates only need the URL handle and Title columns; add Description with your new text. Export a backup first, import, then check a sample of product pages.
Claims AI must not invent
Language models predict likely words; Google's guidance on generative AI content warns their output may contain inaccuracies and that you must fact-check. For product pages, an invented detail is more than an SEO problem. Section 4 of Singapore's Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act makes it an unfair practice to say something that could reasonably mislead a consumer, or make a false claim. Watch these closely:
| Claim type | Example of an AI invention | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Materials | "100% organic cotton" when the supplier says cotton blend | Copy materials word for word from the spec sheet |
| Sizes and dimensions | Wrong measurements or a size chart that does not exist | Paste exact figures; never let AI convert or estimate |
| Origin | "Made in Japan" for an item made elsewhere | Only state origin you can prove |
| Health and safety | "Boosts immunity", "hypoallergenic", "safe for babies" | Only use claims backed by evidence or certification; check HSA rules for supplements and cosmetics |
| Certifications | "Dermatologist tested", "BPA-free" | Include only with documents to hand |
| What is included | Accessories or warranty not supplied | List box contents from the actual product |
The same rule applies to images; our guide to AI product photos explains where editing becomes misleading.
SEO: avoid thin, look-alike pages
Google does not ban AI-written text. Its spam policies define scaled content abuse as generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings rather than help users, and list using generative AI to generate many pages without adding value as an example. In practice for a store:
- Make each description specific. Twenty products that share the same three sentences with the colour swapped add little value.
- Answer buyer questions. Fit, care, compatibility, delivery and returns details beat adjectives.
- Keep the title tag and meta description specific too. Our Shopify SEO checklist covers those fields.
- Do not just rewrite the supplier's copy. If dozens of stores sell the same item with the same text, add your own details: photos of the real item, your sizing notes, how customers use it.

Do it yourself or get help?
The writing and fact-checking are best done by someone who knows the products. The set-up around them, the CSV structure, theme layout and technical SEO, is where outside help saves time.

Frequently asked questions
Not in themselves. Google's guidance focuses on whether content is accurate and helpful, not how it was made. The risk is mass-producing near-identical pages without adding value, which Google's spam policies call scaled content abuse. Give the AI real product facts and edit each draft so it is specific to the product.
In Shopify admin, open a product, click the generate text icon in the description toolbar, write a prompt with product features, keywords and tone, then edit and save. Shopify recommends giving at least a title and two features or keywords for better results.
Yes, with a product CSV. Export your products, add the new text in the Description column, and import to update. Shopify says updates only need the URL handle and Title columns plus the columns you change. Export a backup first and test with a few products.
For Google Merchant Center product feeds, yes. Its policy says AI-generated descriptions must be submitted in the structured description attribute with the digital source type set to trained_algorithmic_media. For ordinary web pages, Google suggests sharing how content was created where that helps readers, but does not require a label.
Correct it straight away, and treat it as your claim, not the AI's. Under Singapore's Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act, saying something that could reasonably mislead a consumer can be an unfair practice, and customers may be entitled to a remedy. This is general information, not legal advice.
