Short answer
List every app charge in Settings > Billing, then check card statements for apps that bill outside Shopify. For each app, ask what it earns, whether a free Shopify app (Flow, Forms, Search & Discovery, Bundles, Inbox) does the same, and if it slows the store. Export data, remove theme code, uninstall.
Where Shopify app costs hide
Shopify's help page on app charges lists four kinds of app-related charges and credits on your bill. Knowing which type each app uses tells you how its cost will move.
| Charge type | How it works | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Subscription | Fixed recurring charge every 30 days | Plans you upgraded once for a campaign and never downgraded |
| Usage charges | Varies with orders, emails, SMS or AI use | Costs that grow with sales; check the usage cap |
| One-time purchases | A single payment for a service or feature | Setup fees for apps you no longer use |
| Application credits | Credits, for example after downgrading mid-cycle | Make sure they're applied |
| External billing | The developer bills your card directly, not via Shopify | Charges that survive uninstalling the app |
Apps bill on their own 30-day cycles, which are then collected with your Shopify bill. That's why app charges on one invoice can cover slightly different dates from your Shopify plan.
Step 1: list every app and what it costs
Start with a simple spreadsheet: app name, what it does, who asked for it, monthly cost, billing type, and whether it touches the storefront.
Open the billing page
In Shopify admin go to Settings > Billing. Click View current charges for pending app charges, and check Past bills for what you've already paid.
Open the Apps page
List every installed app, including free ones, and note which ones you can't explain.
Check your card and bank statements
Look for app developers billing you directly. Shopify warns these external charges don't appear on your Shopify bill and aren't cancelled by uninstalling.
Note usage-based apps
For email, SMS, reviews or AI apps that charge by volume, note last month's usage and the plan's cap.
Add the yearly total
Multiply monthly charges by 12. Seeing the annual figure next to each app makes decisions easier.
Step 2: check for free Shopify apps that do the same job
Shopify now offers several of its own apps free, and they often replace a paid third-party app outright. Each of these is listed as free on the Shopify App Store as of October 2026.
| Free Shopify app | Can replace | Check before switching |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Flow | Paid automation, tagging and low-stock alert apps | Whether your triggers are supported |
| Shopify Forms | Paid popup and signup form apps | Design options and email integration |
| Shopify Search & Discovery | Paid filter and search apps | Filter types and synonyms you rely on |
| Shopify Bundles | Paid fixed bundle and multipack apps | Mix-and-match or tiered discounts may still need an app |
| Shopify Inbox | Paid basic live chat apps | Whether you need multi-channel inboxes |
Also check your theme. Modern themes include features that used to need apps, such as size charts, announcement bars, product badges and colour swatches. Our theme customisation cost guide covers what a developer can add to the theme instead of another monthly app.
Step 3: check what apps do to store speed
Shopify's store speed guide lists installed apps as one of the things that affect speed, and advises reviewing apps and removing any that aren't essential for sales, because too many apps loading assets on your storefront can slow performance.
A quick test: run your home page and a product page through PageSpeed Insights, note the scores, then look at which third-party scripts it lists. Apps that load on every page but are only needed on one (a size chart, a reviews widget on the home page, a chat bubble) are the first candidates to restrict or remove.
Step 4: uninstall cleanly
Shopify's uninstalling apps page lists what to check before you click Uninstall. In short:
Before and after uninstalling
Shopify notes that uninstalling a paid app cancels future recurring charges, but you might still be billed for the current billing cycle.
What a monthly app review looks like
After the first clean-up, ten minutes a month keeps it under control. Check the billing page for new or changed charges, look at any usage-based app that grew, and ask whoever installed a new app what it's for and when to judge whether it worked.
If your store also needs updates and checks beyond apps, our Shopify maintenance guide lists the monthly tasks, and our Shopify store cost guide shows how apps fit into the total running cost.
Do it yourself or get help?
Listing charges and uninstalling obvious extras is a job you can do in an hour. Get help when theme code from old apps is tangled into templates, when you're not sure what an app does, or when replacing an app means changing the theme.
Our Care plan (S$129 a month) includes regular store checks, so app creep and leftover code get caught early. For a store that needs rebuilding with fewer apps from the start, our Shopify Store package (S$1,890) sets up a clean theme and only the apps you need.
Frequently asked questions
In Shopify admin go to Settings > Billing. View current charges shows pending app charges for your next invoice, and Past bills shows what you've paid. Also check your card statements: some apps bill you directly outside Shopify, and those charges never appear on your Shopify bill.
It stops future recurring charges billed through Shopify, but Shopify says you might still be billed for the current billing cycle. Apps that charge you outside Shopify keep charging until you cancel with the developer. If you want a refund, contact the developer before you uninstall.
Some do. Shopify's help centre says some apps add code to your theme that isn't automatically removed when you uninstall. Check the app's listing or ask the developer for removal steps, and look for leftover snippets and scripts in your theme. Leftover code can keep loading files and slow your pages.
As of October 2026, Shopify Flow, Shopify Forms, Shopify Search & Discovery, Shopify Bundles and Shopify Inbox are listed as free on the Shopify App Store. They can replace many paid automation, popup, filter, bundle and basic chat apps. Check that the specific features you rely on are covered before switching.
They can. Shopify's own store speed guidance says too many apps loading assets on your storefront can slow performance, and recommends removing apps that aren't essential for sales. Apps that only change the admin don't affect page speed; apps that add widgets, popups or scripts to your pages do.
