Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro: End of Updates on 13 Oct 2026

Office PCs running Windows 11 Home or Pro version 24H2 stopped receiving security updates after 13 October 2026. Microsoft's release health page says those devices will no longer get monthly security updates and recommends moving to version 25H2 or 26H2. The fix is usually quick, because the newer versions install as a small enablement package with one restart. This guide shows how to check the version on each PC, how to update through Settings or Intune, what Enterprise and Education editions get, and why an unpatched PC is a problem for basic security certification.

Short answer

Yes. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro reached end of updates on 13 October 2026. Update each PC to 25H2 (supported to October 2027) or 26H2 (supported to October 2028). 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions stay supported until 12 October 2027.

What changed on 13 October 2026

Microsoft's Windows 11 version 24H2 release health page says: "As of October 13, 2026, Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions have reached end of updates. Devices running these editions will no longer receive monthly security and non-security preview updates." The October 2026 security update was the last one.

The PC keeps working, but every security flaw found from November onwards stays open. That is the same position as running Windows 10 without extended updates, which our Windows 10 ESU guide covers.

Microsoft's lifecycle policy for Windows 11 Home and Pro also covers Pro Education, Pro for Workstations and SE. Most small offices run Windows 11 Pro, so this applies to them.

How to check the Windows version on every office PC

You need two facts per PC: the edition (Home, Pro, Enterprise) and the version (24H2, 25H2, 26H2). Microsoft's support article shows the steps.

  1. Open Settings > System > About

Right-click Start, choose Settings, then System and About. Under Windows specifications, note the Edition and the Version.

  2. Or run winver

Press Windows key + R, type winver and press Enter. The box shows the version and OS build. Build 26100 is 24H2, 26200 is 25H2 and 26300 is 26H2.

  3. Record it in a simple list

Note PC name, user, edition, version and date checked. A spreadsheet is enough for a small office.

  4. If you use Intune, use the report instead

In the Intune admin centre, the device list shows OS version for every enrolled PC, so you can filter for build 26100 without visiting each desk.

The build numbers come from Microsoft's Windows 11 release information page. Any PC still on 23H2 or older is in the same position and should be updated too.

How to move PCs to 25H2 or 26H2

Microsoft says version 26H2 is delivered as an enablement package for devices on 24H2 and 25H2, with a single restart in most cases, according to its 26H2 notes for IT pros. Because the versions share a servicing branch, it is a small update rather than a reinstall.

Through Settings (each PC)

Fine for under 10 PCs
  • Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates
  • Turn on "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" to be offered 26H2 sooner
  • Install, then restart once
  • Check winver afterwards

Best for: Small offices without device management.

Through Intune (all PCs)

Best for 10+ PCs
  • Create a feature update policy targeting 25H2 or 26H2
  • Assign it to a test group first, then everyone
  • Track progress in the update reports
  • Stops PCs drifting back out of support

Best for: Offices on Microsoft 365 Business Premium or with Intune licences.

The release health page says the 26H2 rollout is phased and will expand over the coming months, so some PCs may be offered 25H2 first. Either version brings the PC back into support. Our Intune setup guide explains how to enrol PCs if you have the licences but have not set it up.

Why an unpatched PC fails security checks

Basic security standards treat unsupported software as a gap. CSA's Cyber Essentials mark includes an Update area: software should be kept updated and software that no longer gets updates should be replaced. A 24H2 Pro PC from November 2026 is out of support until you update it.

Cyber insurers and larger clients' vendor questionnaires ask the same question: are all devices on supported, patched operating systems? A list showing every PC on 25H2 or 26H2 answers it. Our Cyber Essentials checklist covers the rest of the requirements, and software updates and patching explains how to keep apps current, not just Windows.

Do it yourself or get help?

For a handful of PCs, updating through Settings takes about an hour of walking round, plus restarts. For a larger office, or if you want proof for an insurer or certification, central management saves time every year because this happens again each October.

IT Sorted is a Singapore-based team of developers with over 10 years of experience. Device Encryption & Management (S$490) enrols up to 10 devices in Intune or Google endpoint management with update rules and encryption, and Antivirus & Endpoint Protection Rollout (S$390) sets up protection that reports which devices are healthy. Licences are paid to the vendor directly.

Frequently asked questions

Not for Home and Pro. Microsoft's release health page says Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro editions reached end of updates on 13 October 2026 and no longer receive monthly security updates. Enterprise and Education editions of 24H2 remain supported until 12 October 2027. Microsoft recommends moving to version 25H2 or 26H2.

Either brings the PC back into support. 26H2 is supported for Home and Pro until October 2028, a year longer than 25H2. Microsoft is rolling 26H2 out in phases, so if a PC is only offered 25H2, install that now and move to 26H2 later. Both install as small updates from 24H2.

It should not. Microsoft says 26H2 installs on 24H2 and 25H2 devices as an enablement package with a single restart in most cases, because the versions share the same servicing base. As with any update, make sure important files are backed up to OneDrive or another backup first.

Press Windows key and R, type winver and press Enter, or open Settings, System, About. Version 24H2 shows as build 26100. Version 25H2 is build 26200 and 26H2 is build 26300. If you manage PCs with Intune, the device list shows the OS version for every enrolled device.

Not yet. Microsoft's release information page shows Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions remain supported until 12 October 2027. Small businesses on Microsoft 365 Business Premium usually run Windows Pro unless they have upgraded to Enterprise through their licence, so check the edition on each PC.
