Short answer

Office 2021 still opens, but since 13 October 2026 it gets no security updates, bug fixes or support, with no extension. Move business PCs to Microsoft 365 Apps through a Business Standard or Premium plan, or buy Office 2024 if you must stay on a one-time licence (supported to October 2029).

What ended on 13 October 2026

Microsoft's lifecycle announcement states that Office LTSC 2021 reached end of support on 13 October 2026, and that Microsoft no longer provides technical support, bug fixes or security updates for it. The consumer and small-business editions, such as Office Home & Business 2021, Home & Student 2021 and Professional 2021, follow the same date on the Office 2021 lifecycle page.

Microsoft Publisher is caught by the same date. Its retirement notice says support for perpetual Publisher ended on 13 October 2026, and Microsoft 365 subscribers lose Publisher from October 2026. If you still design flyers in Publisher, convert those files.

Office 2021 still works. Why is that a problem?

Microsoft's end of support page for Office 2021 says the apps may continue to function, but there will be no extension and no extended security updates. From now on, any newly found flaw in Word, Excel, Outlook or PowerPoint 2021 stays open.

That matters because Office files are one of the most common ways attackers deliver malware. A booby-trapped invoice in Excel or a CV in Word only needs one unpatched bug. In a small office, the people opening the most attachments from strangers are usually admin, HR and finance staff, exactly the PCs that hold bank access and personal data.

There are also quieter costs. Microsoft only supports connecting older Office versions to Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online and OneDrive while those versions are in support, so problems with Outlook 2021 against a Microsoft 365 mailbox are now your own to solve.

Your upgrade options compared

Microsoft's own recommendation is Microsoft 365 Apps, with Office LTSC 2024 as the path for organisations not ready for the cloud. For a typical Singapore SME, the realistic choices are these three.

Microsoft 365 Business Standard

Most SMEs

  • Desktop Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, always updated
  • Business email, Teams and 1 TB OneDrive included
  • Install on up to 5 PCs or Macs per user
  • Admin centre to add and remove staff

Best for: Teams that also want business email and file sharing.

Microsoft 365 Business Premium

US$22/user/mo + GST

  • Defender for Business and Intune device management
  • Conditional access and data protection

Best for: Firms with customer data or Cyber Essentials plans.

Office 2024 one-time licence

Office Home 2024 SG$275

  • One PC or Mac per licence

  • No email, cloud storage or admin tools
  • Check that the edition you buy allows business use

Best for: A sole proprietor who refuses subscriptions.

Prices are from Microsoft's Singapore business plan page and consumer comparison page, approximate, as of October 2026. Business plans are billed in US dollars, paid yearly, before GST. Our guide to the 2026 Microsoft 365 price increase explains the recent changes.

How to move from Office 2021 to Microsoft 365 Apps

Microsoft's upgrade planning guidance is written for large IT departments. For a small office, the job comes down to six steps.

  1. List every PC and its Office version

In Word, go to File, Account. Note the version, the Windows version and who uses it. Include the reception PC and the old laptop in the store room.

  2. Choose the plan and buy licences in your own name

Buy Business Standard or Premium in a Microsoft 365 tenant your business owns, not a staff member's personal account.

  3. Uninstall Office 2021 first

Remove the old version from Settings, Apps before installing Microsoft 365 Apps to avoid version conflicts.

  4. Install Microsoft 365 Apps and sign in with the work account

Each user installs from the Microsoft 365 portal. Outlook profiles and signatures may need to be set up again.

  5. Move Publisher files and old templates

Convert Publisher files to PDF or Word and copy custom Excel and Word templates to the new install.

  6. Check updates are on and record it

Confirm automatic updates in File, Account, Update Options, and update your asset list with the new version.

Cyber Essentials and unsupported Office

CSA's Cyber Essentials mark covers asset management and software updates. In plain terms, the requirements expect you to keep a software inventory, remove or replace unsupported software, and apply security updates promptly. Office 2021 now falls into the unsupported bucket.

If you hold the mark or plan to apply, Office 2021 on a business PC is a finding waiting to happen. Fix it before your assessment, and keep proof such as the updated asset list and a screenshot of the new version. Our Cyber Essentials checklist lists the other areas assessors look at.

Do it yourself or get help?

A two- or three-person office can do this in an afternoon: buy the plan, uninstall Office 2021, install Microsoft 365 Apps and check updates. It gets harder when the switch also means moving email from an old host into Microsoft 365, or when PCs are still on Windows 10.

Our Business Email Setup (S$249) sets up Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace in your own name for up to five people, with DNS records and an admin handover. If you are replacing old PCs or want every machine protected while you upgrade, the Antivirus and Endpoint Protection Rollout (S$390) covers up to 10 devices. If you are weighing the Premium plan, read whether Business Premium is worth it first.

Frequently asked questions

No. Microsoft says the Office 2021 apps may continue to function. What stops is technical support, bug fixes and security updates, with no extension and no extended security updates. You can keep opening documents, but any new vulnerability discovered in Office 2021 will not be fixed, which makes opening files from outside the business riskier over time.

No. Microsoft's end of support page for Office 2021 states there will be no extension and no extended security updates. Extended security update programmes exist for some Windows versions, but not for Office 2021 or Office LTSC 2021. The only way to stay supported is to move to Microsoft 365 Apps or Office 2024.

Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 are supported until October 2029 on Windows 11, so they are a supported choice. You pay once per device but get no new features, no business email, no cloud storage and no admin tools. You will face the same upgrade decision again in 2029. Check that the edition you buy is licensed for business use.

Outlook 2021 may still connect to Microsoft 365 mailboxes for now, but Microsoft only supports older Office versions connecting to its cloud services while those versions are in support. If something breaks, Microsoft will not help fix it, and future service changes can stop it working. Moving to Microsoft 365 Apps removes that risk.

If your PCs still run Windows 10, yes. Microsoft states that on Windows 10 devices, even Office 2024 and LTSC 2024 run unsupported. A supported setup in late 2026 means Windows 11 plus Microsoft 365 Apps or Office 2024. Plan both upgrades together so you only disturb each user once.
