Intercom Fin vs Zendesk AI Agents: Per-Resolution Pricing

Intercom and Zendesk both sell AI support agents that you pay for per result rather than per seat. The catch is that each company defines a "result" differently, and that decides your bill. This guide sets out the published prices as of October 2026, how Intercom counts a Fin outcome and how Zendesk counts an automated resolution, a worked example at 1,000 conversations a month, and when a fixed-price website assistant is the cheaper answer for a small business.

Key takeaways

  • Intercom charges US$0.99 per Fin outcome, at most once per conversation, refunded if the conversation is reopened.
  • Zendesk Suite Team includes 5 automated resolutions per agent a month; extra ones are US$2.00 pay-as-you-go.
  • Intercom counts assumed resolutions, where the customer leaves without asking for more help.
  • Zendesk's tiers since 18 May 2026 bill verified resolutions; contained ones do not use your allowance.
  • Both let you cap usage, so set a monthly limit before switching the AI on.

Short answer

Intercom Fin costs US$0.99 per outcome, counted when a customer does not ask for more help after Fin's answer. Zendesk includes a few automated resolutions per agent each month, then charges US$2.00 each pay-as-you-go, counted only after an AI check confirms the issue was resolved.

Intercom Fin vs Zendesk AI agents at a glance

Both products sit on top of a helpdesk that you pay for per agent seat. The AI is then billed by usage. Prices below are in US dollars, approximate, as of October 2026.

Intercom Fin

Simple per-outcome price

US$0.99 per outcome + seats from US$29/seat/mo

  • One price for resolutions and procedure handoffs
  • Charged once per conversation at most
  • Refunded if the conversation is reopened
  • Can run on another helpdesk, with a minimum monthly commitment

Best for: Teams that want predictable per-conversation AI pricing.

Zendesk AI agents

Allowance then pay per resolution

Seats from US$55/agent/mo (Suite Team) + US$2.00 per extra resolution

  • 5 to 10 automated resolutions per agent a month included
  • Committed bundles cost less per resolution than pay-as-you-go
  • LLM verification before a resolution is billed
  • AI agents on messaging, email and voice

Best for: Teams already on Zendesk tickets and email.

How Intercom counts a Fin outcome

Intercom's help article Fin AI Agent outcomes lists what is billed. For support teams, two outcome types matter, both at US$0.99:

  • Resolution: after Fin's last answer, the customer either confirms it helped (confirmed resolution) or leaves without asking for more help (assumed resolution).
  • Procedure handoff: Fin completes a Procedure you configured that ends by handing over to a person or a workflow.

Intercom says you are charged for one outcome per conversation at most, even if Fin answers several questions, and its Fin pricing page says the outcome is refunded if the conversation is reopened. Escalations triggered by your general escalation rules, and procedures that fail on a technical error, are not billed. Sales outcomes are priced differently: a qualified lead is US$9.99.

How Zendesk counts an automated resolution

Zendesk's automated resolution tiers, introduced on 18 May 2026, sort each AI conversation into three groups:

TierWhat happenedUses your allowance?
Assisted escalationAI collected details or routed, then a human resolved itNo
Contained resolutionAI answered and the customer did not ask for more, but the LLM check did not confirm a resolutionNo
Verified resolutionAI answered, customer did not ask for more, and the LLM check confirmed it was resolvedYes

Zendesk evaluates the conversation when it ends: 2 hours after the first message on messaging by default (extendable to 72 hours), 72 hours after the first email, or at hang-up on voice. Older accounts may still be on the pre-tier platform, where Zendesk's help explains how to check which one you are on.

Each plan includes an allowance: 5 automated resolutions per agent a month on Support Team and Suite Team, 10 on Suite Professional, with a cap of 10,000 a year. Beyond that you buy committed bundles (cheaper per resolution, sold in blocks of 100 or more) or pay US$2.00 each as you go. You can also tell Zendesk to pause the AI agent when the allowance runs out.

What 1,000 conversations a month could cost

Per-resolution pricing feels cheap per unit and adds up quickly. Here is an illustration using only the list prices above.

Two things move these numbers more than the list price: your resolution rate (how many conversations the AI closes) and how each vendor counts a result. Zendesk only bills verified resolutions, so its billable count may be lower than Intercom's for the same traffic. Run a month's pilot with a usage cap and compare real invoices before committing.

Controls to set before you switch either one on

Both vendors give you ways to stop a surprise bill. Use them on day one:

When a fixed-price website assistant is cheaper

Per-resolution pricing makes sense when you already run a helpdesk with several agents. For a small business whose chat traffic is mainly pre-sales questions (prices, hours, delivery, booking), paying up to US$2.00 every time the AI answers can cost more than the questions are worth.

Choose Intercom or Zendesk AI if

  • You already use the helpdesk and have support staff
  • You need ticket history, SLAs and reporting
  • AI must take actions such as order lookups inside the helpdesk

Choose a simple website assistant if

  • Most chats are simple pre-sales questions
  • One or two people handle enquiries by WhatsApp or email
  • You want a fixed set-up cost and small model usage fees

Do it yourself or get help?

Trying Fin or Zendesk AI agents yourself is straightforward if you already use either helpdesk: both have trials, and the main work is cleaning up your help content and setting usage limits.

If you only need an assistant on your website, IT Sorted is a Singapore-based team of developers with over 10 years of experience. Our AI Website Assistant is S$790 fixed: trained on your website, FAQ and documents, with lead capture to your inbox, hand-over to WhatsApp or email, guard-rails so it only answers about your business, and a usage report after 30 days. AI model usage fees are billed to you directly and are usually a few dollars a month, not per resolution.

Frequently asked questions

Intercom charges US$0.99 per Fin outcome as of October 2026. An outcome is a resolution or a completed procedure handoff, and you are billed at most once per conversation. Intercom says outcomes are refunded if the conversation is reopened. Helpdesk seats are charged separately, from US$29 per seat a month on the Essential plan.

Zendesk includes AI agents in its Suite and Support plans with an allowance of automated resolutions: 5 per agent a month on Team plans and 10 on Suite Professional. Extra resolutions cost US$2.00 each pay-as-you-go, or less per unit if you buy a committed bundle of 100 or more, as of October 2026.

Intercom bills a Fin resolution when the customer confirms the answer helped or leaves without asking for more help. Zendesk's tiered model bills only verified resolutions, where an LLM check confirms the issue was resolved; contained resolutions that fail the check do not use your allowance. The same chat can be billed by one and not the other.

Yes. Intercom's pricing page says Fin can work with other helpdesks, priced at US$0.99 per outcome with a minimum monthly commitment, such as 50 outcomes, and no seat, setup or integration fees. Check the current minimum with Intercom before you sign, since it is given only as an example on the page.

Set a hard usage limit before going live. Intercom lets you set usage reminders and hard limits on Fin, and Zendesk lets you pause AI agent functionality when you reach your automated resolution allowance. Review a sample of billed conversations each week to make sure you are paying for correct answers.
