Google Vids vs Canva Video for Quick Business Videos

Two tools now sit on many small business laptops for making short videos. Google Vids comes with every Google Workspace Business plan and is built for training, internal updates and explainers. Canva is the default for social posts and ads, with a video editor, templates and brand kits. They overlap, but each is stronger in a different place. This guide compares them as of October 2026: what each plan includes, the AI features and their monthly limits, sharing and export, and which to use for internal videos versus customer-facing ads.

Short answer

Use Google Vids for internal training, onboarding and explainer videos if you already pay for Google Workspace: it is included, shares like a Google Doc and has AI avatars and voiceovers. Use Canva for social and ad videos, where its templates, brand kits and resize tools matter more.

AI features compared

Both tools now lean heavily on AI. What matters for a small business is whether the AI saves time on the videos you actually make.

Canva's pricing page describes AI usage as a shared allowance: Pro gets 10 times the AI of Canva Free and Business 20 times, with an AI Pass add-on available at extra cost. Heavy AI video use can hit that ceiling.

Sharing, export and brand control

Vids works like other Google Workspace files. Google's help says you can share a Vids file as Viewer, Commenter or Editor, export an MP4 to Drive, download an MP4, or export straight to YouTube, where it uploads as Private. Up to 100 people can view, edit or comment at the same time, and any Vids file can be turned into a template for the organisation.

Choose Vids if

  • Videos are for staff, onboarding, SOPs or customer how-tos
  • You want Workspace sharing controls and admin settings
  • You already make training decks in Google Slides
  • You do not want another paid subscription

Choose Canva if

  • Videos are for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook or ads
  • You need brand kits with approved fonts, colours and logos
  • One video must be resized for feed, Reels and Stories
  • A designer or agency already works in Canva

For ads, export sizes matter. Our Meta ad sizes cheat sheet lists the recommended ratios and safe zones for Facebook and Instagram.

Who owns AI-generated video

Canva's AI Product Terms, effective 26 June 2026, say you own your output from its AI tools, except where the output modifies or incorporates Canva library content, which stays under Canva's content licence. The terms also say outputs may not be unique, prohibit removing provenance metadata such as C2PA, and prohibit misleading people that AI content is human-made.

For Vids, content created in a Workspace business account is customer data under Google's Workspace terms. In both tools, check you have rights to any logos, photos and music you upload, and avoid using a real person's likeness in an avatar without their written consent.

Before choosing

Both tools are designed for non-designers, and an internal training video in Vids is a good first project. Ad videos are harder: hooks, pacing, platform specs and policy checks decide whether the money is wasted.

Our Extra Ad Creative Pack (S$290 per pack) delivers 6 static ad designs from your photos in 1:1, 4:5 and 9:16, with headline and text variants checked against platform rules, or swaps 2 statics for one 15-second video edit from your clips, with editable source files.
