Short answer
Find the exact reason in the account notification, fix the cause first, then file one thorough appeal through the Contact Us link in the suspension banner. Do not open a new account: Google treats that as circumventing systems. Billing suspensions may need payment verification within 30 days.
First: is it a suspension, a hold or a disapproval?
Google uses several different restrictions, and each has a different fix. Check the red banner at the top of the account and the email Google sent before doing anything else.
| Status | What it means | How to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ad disapproved | One ad or asset breaks a policy; the rest of the account runs | Edit the ad or appeal in Policy Manager |
| Warning | First repeat violation of certain policies; ads keep running | Fix the violating ads before a strike |
| Temporary hold (strike) | First strike: 3-day hold; second strike: 7-day hold | Fix violations and submit the acknowledgement form, or appeal the strike |
| Account paused (payments) | Google wants you to confirm a payment method or pay a balance | Complete the task under Admin, Policy, Account |
| Account suspended | No ads can run from this account | Fix the cause and submit an appeal |
Google's strikes page says no strike is issued for the first violation, accounts can receive up to 3 strikes per policy, and a third strike within 90 days of the second leads to suspension. The strike system covers a defined list of policies, such as enabling dishonest behaviour, clickbait, misleading ad design and personal loans.
The main reasons Google suspends accounts
Google's account suspensions overview groups suspensions into a few families.
- Egregious policy violations: violations so serious they are unlawful or cause significant harm. Google suspends immediately without warning and says the advertiser will not be allowed to advertise again.
- Circumventing systems: treated as egregious. Examples include cloaking, creating new accounts after a suspension, spreading violating ads across accounts, and submitting false information to verification programmes.
- Billing and payment: unpaid balances or concerns about future payments, suspicious payment activity, chargebacks against legitimate charges, and promotional code abuse.
- Unauthorised activity: if Google detects someone else trying to access the account, it may suspend it temporarily to prevent fraudulent charges.
- Repeat violations: after strikes or warnings; Google says it sends a warning at least 7 days before a suspension for repeat violations.
- Other: age requirements on the Google Account, failed advertiser verification, and Ad Grants policy for non-profits.
Circumventing systems and cloaking: the vague one
Many small advertisers are surprised by a circumventing systems suspension because they never tried to trick anyone. Google's policy page explains that cloaking, showing Google different content from what users see, can happen without the owner's knowledge: a hacked website can redirect visitors elsewhere, and a pop-up that blocks most of a page can stop Google seeing the landing page.
Before appealing a circumventing systems suspension
Our guide to Google Ads landing page quality covers what a compliant, well-built landing page looks like.
How to appeal a Google Ads suspension
Google says accounts are reinstated only in compelling circumstances, such as a mistake, so the appeal needs to be thorough, accurate and honest.
Read the exact policy cited
Open the policy page linked in the notification. Note what it lists as violations and its best practices.
Fix the cause
Remove violating ads, clean a hacked site, add missing business details to your website, or settle any unpaid balance.
Complete verification if asked
Some advertisers must pass advertiser verification to appeal; Google says those who fail 3 attempts cannot appeal. Billing suspensions may require payment method verification within 30 days.
Submit one appeal
Use the Contact Us link in the suspension notification. Explain what happened, what you changed and how you will prevent it.
Wait for the email
The account shows 'Appeal pending'. Don't resubmit while it is pending; Google may stop processing appeals for 7 days if it sees misuse.
If rejected, improve and re-appeal
Google allows a re-appeal through the same process. Add new evidence rather than repeating the same text.
Advertiser verification is a common trigger in Singapore; our guide to Google Ads advertiser verification explains the documents Google asks for.
Billing and payment suspensions
Google's billing and payment suspensions page separates a temporary pause from a suspension. In a pause, an admin is asked to confirm the payment method or pay a small amount or outstanding balance under Admin, Policy, Account, and the account is not suspended.
For a suspension appeal, Google may ask you to verify each payment method within 30 days, with updates sent from payments-noreply@google.com. Verification can involve a temporary charge of up to US$1.95 whose last six digits are a code, a payment, or documents such as legal name, address, date of birth, government ID, proof of address and an image of the payment method. The temporary charge is refunded within 30 days.
Preventing the next suspension
Most suspensions of genuine small businesses trace back to a few avoidable causes: a hacked or mismatched landing page, payment details that don't match the business, and too many people with admin access.
Good habits
- One account in the company's name, with a company card
- Landing pages show business name, address, contact details and clear pricing
- MFA on every user, and leavers removed promptly
- Website patched and monitored for malware
Common triggers
- Several accounts for the same business set up by different agencies
- Personal cards and mismatched names in payments
- Chargebacks filed instead of disputing a charge with Google
- Claims you cannot back up, or offers that are not actually available
Do it yourself or get help?
If the cause is clear, such as an unpaid balance or a single ad, you can usually fix it and appeal yourself. For circumventing systems or misrepresentation suspensions, a careful review before the appeal improves your odds, because you may not get many attempts.
Our Ad Account Audit (S$290) reviews up to 2 ad accounts, tracking and the landing page, and gives a prioritised fix list and recorded walkthrough; it does not include making the changes or guarantee reinstatement. If you need a clean start once the account is restored, Google Ads Setup (S$690) builds the account in your name with conversions and a Search campaign. IT Sorted is a Singapore-based team of developers with over 10 years of experience; you pay upfront, send the brief in writing and follow progress on your order page.
Frequently asked questions
Google suspends immediately, without prior warning, for egregious violations, which include circumventing systems such as cloaking or creating accounts to get around a previous suspension. Billing problems, suspicious payment activity and signs of unauthorised access can also suspend an account quickly. Repeat violations normally get a warning at least 7 days beforehand.
No. Google's circumventing systems policy lists creating new accounts after a suspension decision as a violation. New accounts are often linked to the suspended one through payment details, domains or users and get suspended too, which can make your original appeal harder to win.
Google does not publish a fixed time. Your account shows 'Appeal pending' and you receive an email when the review is done. If verification is required, it must be completed first; billing suspensions may require payment method verification within 30 days before the appeal is reviewed.
A strike is issued for repeated violations of certain policies after an initial warning. The first strike puts the account on a 3-day hold, the second a 7-day hold, and a third strike within 90 days of the second suspends the account. You release a hold by fixing violations and submitting the acknowledgement form, or by appealing.
Yes. Google notes that websites can be hacked and cloaking content added without the owner knowing, which can trigger a circumventing systems suspension. Scan and clean the site, check it with Google's Safe Browsing tool, remove unknown redirects, then explain the fix in your appeal.
