Short answer
For low volume, DocuSign or DocuSeal's cloud plan is simplest. Self-hosting DocuSeal is free in licence terms but you own the server, updates, backups and years of signed records. It pays off mainly at high volume or when data must stay in-house.
Quick comparison: DocuSeal vs DocuSign
DocuSeal comes in three forms: free open-source software you host, a paid on-premises licence with extra features, and a cloud service. DocuSign is cloud only for small businesses.
DocuSeal self-hosted (open source)
Free licenceUS$0 + your server
- Unlimited documents and templates
- You run the server, updates and backups
- Data stays on your infrastructure
- AGPLv3 licence; DocuSeal attribution must stay in the interface
Best for: High volume, in-house IT, data must stay on your servers.
DocuSeal cloud
Free, or US$20/user/month Pro
- Free plan: 10 signature request emails a month
- Pro: unlimited requests, logo, reminders, own email address
- API and embedded signing at US$0.20 per completion
Best for: Small teams wanting low cost without running a server.
DocuSign
From S$13/month (Personal); S$35/user/month (Standard)
- Widely recognised by clients and banks
- Envelope limits per plan
- Mature integrations and support
Best for: Low to medium volume, clients who expect DocuSign.

Are DocuSeal signatures legally valid in Singapore?
Singapore's Electronic Transactions Act 2010 lets an electronic signature satisfy a legal requirement for a signature if the method identifies the person and shows their intention, and is as reliable as appropriate for the purpose. It does not name approved vendors, so a signature made in DocuSeal can be valid in the same way as one made in DocuSign.
The Act's First Schedule excludes some matters from these rules, including wills, declarations of trust and powers of attorney, and contracts for the sale or transfer of immovable property. Our guide to e-signatures in Singapore, DocuSign vs Sign with Singpass covers the exclusions and identity options in detail.
Audit trail and signer identity
Both tools record an audit log of each signing: emails, timestamps, IP addresses and document hashes. The difference is how strongly each identifies the signer.
| Feature | DocuSeal | DocuSign |
|---|---|---|
| Audit log of signing events | Yes, all plans | Yes, all plans |
| Email-based signer identification | Yes | Yes |
| SMS or phone verification | Phone 2FA: 20 a month free, unlimited on Pro | Check plan comparison |
| ID document verification | US$2 per verification | Check plan comparison |
| Singpass-based signing | No | Not on standard plans; see Sign with Singpass platforms |
For everyday agreements like quotations, NDAs and service contracts, email identification plus the audit log is usually enough. For higher-risk documents, consider stronger identity checks or a Sign with Singpass platform.
What self-hosting DocuSeal really involves
DocuSeal's GitHub README shows it runs as a single Docker container, using SQLite by default or PostgreSQL or MySQL if configured, with files stored on disk or in AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage or Azure. Getting it running is quick. Running it properly for years is the real commitment.
Self-hosting duties
Signed contracts are business records. If the server is lost and backups fail, you lose both the documents and the evidence that they were signed. That risk is the main cost of self-hosting, not the server bill. Our Synology NAS vs cloud backup guide covers backup options for small businesses.
Costs at low vs high volume
The cheapest option depends on how many people send documents and how many documents you send.
| Monthly volume | Usually cheapest | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 documents, 1 user | DocuSeal free cloud or DocuSign Personal | Low limits are enough |
| 10 to 100, a few users | DocuSeal Pro cloud or DocuSign Standard | No server to manage |
| Hundreds, many users | Self-hosted DocuSeal or a DocuSign quote | Envelope limits make per-user plans expensive |
| Embedded in your own app | DocuSeal API (US$0.20 per completion) or self-hosted | Per-completion pricing scales with use |
If documents are part of a customer flow, for example tenancy agreements, our guide to e-signatures for property agents shows how agencies set up templates.
Which should you choose?
Most small businesses should not self-host e-signatures just to save a few hundred dollars a year.
Self-host DocuSeal if
- You send hundreds of documents a month
- Documents must stay on your own servers for client or sector reasons
- You want signing embedded in your own app or portal
- You already run servers with backups and monitoring
Use a cloud service if
- You send a handful of contracts a month
- Nobody is responsible for server updates and backups
- Clients expect a DocuSign envelope
- You need strong identity checks such as Singpass

Frequently asked questions
Generally yes for most business documents. Singapore's Electronic Transactions Act recognises electronic signatures that identify the signer, show their intention and use a method reliable for the purpose. It does not require a specific vendor. Wills, trusts, powers of attorney and property sale or transfer documents are excluded, and you must keep the audit trail as evidence.
The open-source edition is free to download and self-host under the AGPLv3 licence, with additional terms requiring DocuSeal's attribution to remain in the user interface. You still pay for the server, email sending and your time to maintain it. DocuSeal's cloud service has a free plan with 10 signature request emails a month and a Pro plan at US$20 per user per month.
As of October 2026, DocuSign's Singapore pricing lists Personal at S$13 a month billed yearly for one user, Standard at S$35 per user a month billed yearly with 100 envelopes per user per year, and Business Pro at S$55 per user a month. Higher volumes and advanced identity options need higher plans or add-ons.
You become responsible for uptime, security updates, backups and keeping signed documents and audit logs readable for years. If the server is compromised or data is lost without good backups, you could lose the evidence that a contract was signed. Self-hosting suits businesses that already run servers properly or need documents kept on their own infrastructure.
Yes for new documents. DocuSeal lists importing templates from DocuSign as a feature. Previously signed DocuSign envelopes should be downloaded with their certificates of completion and archived, because the audit evidence lives in DocuSign. Keep that archive for as long as you need the records, generally at least five years for business documents.
