Verifying Your Domain With Meta: DNS TXT Method, Step by Step

Meta lets a business claim its website domain inside Meta Business Suite. Once verified, you control who can edit link previews and ad links pointing to your site, which helps stop other Pages misusing your brand. It is free and takes a few minutes if you can edit your domain's DNS. This guide explains why it's worth doing, compares the three methods Meta offers, walks through the DNS TXT method step by step, and covers what to do when verification fails. It reflects Meta's help pages as of October 2026.

Short answer

In Meta Business Suite, go to Settings, Brand safety, Domains, add your root domain (yourcompany.com, no www), choose DNS TXT record, add the facebook-domain-verification value as a TXT record at your DNS host with Host @, then click Verify domain. Leave the record in place.

Why verify your domain with Meta

Meta's About domain verification page says verifying lets you manage editing permissions over links and content pointing to your domain, both organic posts and ads, so only trusted employees and partners represent your brand. After verifying, you assign which Pages may edit your ads' links; other Pages in your business portfolio can't.

  • Ad link editing: see which advertisers run ads pointing to your domain and allow or block their link editing.
  • Organic link editing: edit link previews for posts that link to your site, and let partners do the same.
  • Business verification: Meta's when to use domain verification page says it can replace the phone or email code when you have no business phone, or your email domain doesn't match your website.
  • Shops and commerce: if you send buyers from Facebook commerce surfaces to your website, you may need to confirm the domain you sell through.

Meta notes that verifying your business is different from Meta Verified for businesses, and it won't give you a verified badge.

DNS TXT vs meta tag vs HTML file

Meta's developer guide to verifying your domain lists three methods. You only need one.

MethodWhat you doGood whenWatch out
DNS TXT recordAdd a TXT record at your DNS hostYou can edit DNS; works for any website platformMust be added at the right DNS host
Meta tagPaste a tag into the head of your home pageYou can edit your site's header codeA theme change or rebuild can remove it
HTML file uploadUpload Meta's file to the site's root folderYou have file access to the hostingNot possible on many hosted builders

We recommend the DNS TXT method for most businesses. It survives website redesigns, platform moves and theme updates, which often silently remove a meta tag or file. Our general guide to TXT record domain verification covers the same method for Google and Microsoft.

Before you start

Meta's verify your domain page lists the requirements:

Requirements

How to verify your domain with a DNS TXT record

These steps follow Meta's Business Help and developer pages as of October 2026. Menu names can change slightly.

  1. Open Domains in Meta Business Suite

Go to Settings, then Brand safety, then Domains.

  2. Add your domain

Click + Add, choose Create a domain, and enter the root domain only, for example yourcompany.com. Meta says not to enter www or https://. You only need to verify subdomains when onboarding to Facebook Commerce.

  3. Choose the DNS TXT record option

Meta shows a TXT value that starts with facebook-domain-verification= followed by a code. Copy it with the copy button.

  4. Add the TXT record at your DNS host

Log in where your DNS is hosted (registrar, Cloudflare or web host), add a record of type TXT, put @ in the Host field if your provider asks for one, paste the value and save.

  5. Check the record is live

Use a public TXT lookup such as Google Admin Toolbox Dig. Meta itself suggests using a DNS TXT lookup tool to confirm the record has updated.

  6. Click Verify domain

Back in Meta Business Suite, click Verify domain. Meta says this usually takes minutes but can take up to 72 hours.

  7. Assign your Pages

Under the verified domain, assign the Facebook Pages that may edit links to your domain, then save.

If you are also adding other DNS records for your website or email at the same time, our guide to connecting a domain without breaking email explains which records to leave alone.

Should you keep the TXT record afterwards?

Meta's two help pages disagree slightly. The developer guide says to leave the TXT entry in your DNS because it may be checked periodically. The Business Help page says that once verified, you can remove the TXT record and it won't affect verification status.

Keep it. A TXT record does no harm, and it saves you re-verifying if Meta does recheck. Note what it is for in your IT records, so nobody deletes it later as an unknown string. Our DNS records explainer covers how TXT records sit alongside your SPF and other records.

When Meta domain verification fails

Most failures come from a handful of causes. Work through them in order.

SymptomLikely causeFix
TXT lookup doesn't show the valueRecord added at the registrar, but DNS is hosted elsewhereCheck nameservers and add the record at the real DNS host
Record shows under a strange nameDomain typed into the Host fieldDelete it and re-add with Host @ or blank
Value shows but Meta still failsCopied value incomplete, or extra quotes or spacesCopy again with the copy button and replace the record
Domain already claimed elsewhereVerified in another business portfolio, often an agency'sAsk that business to release it or request access
Entered www.yourcompany.comMeta expects the root domainAdd yourcompany.com instead

Meta's Business Help has a page on troubleshooting failed domain verification. If the record is visible in a public lookup and still fails after a day, try the meta-tag method as a fallback.

Do it yourself or get help?

If you have DNS access and full control of the business portfolio, Meta domain verification takes about 15 minutes, most of it waiting. Where it goes wrong is usually access: an agency holds the portfolio, or nobody knows where DNS is hosted.

Our Meta Ads Setup (S$590) sets up your Meta business portfolio and ad account in your name, verifies your domain, installs the Meta Pixel and Conversions API with key events tested, and builds your first campaign. If you only need DNS sorted, Domain & DNS Setup is S$99. IT Sorted is a Singapore-based team of developers with over 10 years of experience; you pay upfront online and brief us in writing. Your ad budget is paid by you, straight to Meta.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Meta's Business Help says it is free to verify your domains. You need a Meta business portfolio with full control, and admin or developer access to your domain. The only cost is the time to add a DNS record, a meta tag or an HTML file, depending on the method you choose.

Add it wherever your domain's DNS is hosted. That may be your registrar, Cloudflare or your web host, depending on your domain's nameservers. Create a TXT record with Host set to @ or left blank and paste the facebook-domain-verification value exactly. Then check it with a public TXT lookup before clicking Verify domain.

No. Meta's help page says to enter the root domain without any prefixes, for example website.com, not www.website.com or https://website.com. Verifying the root domain covers the links people share. Meta says you only need to verify subdomains when onboarding to Facebook Commerce.

Meta's developer guide says the DNS change usually takes only minutes, but in some cases it can take up to 72 hours. Check the record is visible in a public TXT lookup first. If it is visible and Meta still can't verify after a day, check the value and Host field, or try the meta-tag method.

No. Meta says verifying your business in Meta Business Suite is different from Meta Verified for businesses and won't give you a verified badge. Domain verification is about controlling who can edit links and content pointing to your website, and it can help complete business verification.
