Short answer
Choose Business Starter if your team mainly needs email, calendar and modest file storage. Choose Business Standard if you store lots of files in Drive, record meetings, or want Gemini in Docs and Meet. Google applies one edition to the whole organisation.
Business Starter vs Standard at a glance
Prices below are from Google Workspace's Singapore pricing page, in SGD per user per month on the flexible plan, before GST, as of October 2026. Google says a one-year commitment saves up to 16%, and new customers often see an introductory discount for the first few months.
Business Starter
Email firstS$9.40/user/mo
- Custom email on your domain
- 30 GB pooled storage per user
- Meet up to 100 participants, no recording
- Gemini in Gmail and the Gemini app
- Shared drives (added in 2024)
Best for: Small teams whose work lives mostly in email and calendar.
Business Standard
Most teams that share filesS$18.80/user/mo
- 2 TB pooled storage per user
- Meet up to 150, with recording and noise cancellation
- Gemini in Gmail, Docs, Meet and more
- Appointment booking pages and eSignature
- Custom email layouts and mail merge
Best for: Teams that store work in Drive and run client meetings on Meet.
For a five-person team, the difference is S$47 a month or S$564 a year on flexible pricing. Whether that is worth paying comes down to storage, meetings and AI, covered below.
Storage: how pooled storage works on each plan
Google Workspace storage is pooled. Google's pricing page says Business Starter includes 30 GB of pooled storage per user and Business Standard 2 TB per user, shared across the organisation. A five-person Starter team therefore has 150 GB in total, covering Gmail, Drive and Photos together.
| Team size | Starter pool | Standard pool |
|---|---|---|
| 3 users | 90 GB | 6 TB |
| 5 users | 150 GB | 10 TB |
| 10 users | 300 GB | 20 TB |
For a team that sends quotes and invoices, 150 GB lasts years. For a design studio, an architect, a video producer or anyone scanning documents, it fills up fast. When the pool is full, people cannot receive email attachments or upload files until someone frees space or the plan changes. Admins can set per-user limits so one heavy user does not use up everyone's share.
Google Meet, Gemini and other feature differences
Beyond storage, three differences decide it for most businesses.
- Meet recording: Starter cannot record meetings. Standard records to Drive and adds noise cancellation and up to 150 participants. If you train staff or run client calls you need to keep, this alone justifies Standard.
- Gemini: Starter includes the Gemini assistant in Gmail and chat with Gemini. Standard adds Gemini in Docs, Sheets, Meet and more, with expanded access to the Gemini app and NotebookLM features, per Google's pricing page. Since 2025 these AI features are part of the plan price, not a separate add-on (Google Workspace admin help).
- Booking pages and eSignature: Standard includes appointment booking pages in Calendar and eSignature for Docs and PDFs, which can replace a separate scheduling or signing tool for simple needs.
If you are weighing the AI side, our guide to Gemini in Gmail and Workspace privacy explains what Google does with your data and which admin settings to check.
Vault and eDiscovery: Standard does not include them
A common misunderstanding: Google Vault, used to retain, archive and search email and files for legal or compliance reasons, is listed on Business Plus (S$29.40 per user per month, flexible), not on Standard. Plus also raises storage to 5 TB per user and Meet to 500 participants.
Our Workspace and Microsoft 365 backup guide compares Vault with third-party backup, which many small teams find cheaper than moving everyone to Plus.
Can you mix Starter and Standard in one company?
This is the question most small businesses ask after signing up. Google's help page on switching to Business Standard says everyone in your organisation gets the same subscription: you cannot move some users to a higher Business edition while others stay on the lower one.
- If only one person needs recording or extra storage, compare the cost of upgrading everyone with a workaround (a separate recording tool, or archiving old files).
- Shared mailboxes such as info@ or accounts@ can often be Google Groups or aliases instead of paid users, which cuts the bill on either plan.
- Downgrading has rules: on an annual plan you must switch to flexible first, and if you lose a feature such as Vault you can only get it back within 51 days, or after waiting at least 85 days.
If you are still deciding between Google and Microsoft, our Microsoft 365 vs Google Workspace comparison covers that choice first, and what business email costs in Singapore adds cheaper email-only options.
Which plan suits which business
A simple way to decide, based on how the team works today rather than what it might do later. You can upgrade on the flexible plan at any time.
| Your team | Plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1-5 people, mostly email, quotes and invoices | Starter | 30 GB per user pooled is plenty |
| Client meetings that must be recorded | Standard | Starter cannot record |
| Design, photo, video or scanned documents | Standard | 2 TB per user pooled |
| Heavy use of Gemini in Docs and Sheets | Standard | Starter has Gemini in Gmail only |
| Legal hold, retention or eDiscovery needs | Business Plus | Vault is on Plus |
Do it yourself or get help?
Signing up and choosing a plan is easy to do yourself. What usually needs care is the set-up around it: domain and DNS records, moving old mail, and locking down sharing and sign-in.
Before you pick a Workspace plan
Our Business Email Setup (S$249) sets up Workspace on your domain with the right DNS records. Microsoft 365 / Google Security Lockdown (S$590) then applies the settings in our Google Workspace security checklist.
Frequently asked questions
As of October 2026, Google's Singapore pricing page lists Business Starter at S$9.40 per user per month and Business Standard at S$18.80 on the flexible plan, excluding GST. Google says a one-year commitment saves up to 16%, and new customers may see an introductory discount for their first months. Check the pricing page on the day you sign up.
No. Meeting recording is not included in Business Starter. Business Standard and higher editions can record meetings to the organiser's Drive and add noise cancellation. Starter meetings support up to 100 participants, Standard up to 150 and Business Plus up to 500, according to Google's pricing page in October 2026.
Google's admin help says that when you switch editions everyone in the organisation gets the same subscription, so you cannot keep some users on Starter while others move to Standard. To control cost, reduce paid users by turning shared addresses into groups or aliases, or use a separate tool for the one feature only a few people need.
For many small offices, yes, because storage is pooled across the team. Five Starter users share 150 GB for Gmail, Drive and Photos combined. Teams that keep large design files, videos, photos or years of scanned documents tend to outgrow it. Check current mailbox and Drive sizes in your admin console before you choose.
No. Google lists Vault, which retains, archives and searches email and files for compliance and legal discovery, on Business Plus and above. If you need long-term retention but not the rest of Business Plus, a third-party backup for Google Workspace is often cheaper than upgrading every user.
