Lovable vs Bolt vs Replit: Can AI Builders Replace a Developer?

Lovable, Bolt and Replit all turn a plain-English description into a working web app: a booking tool, a client portal, an internal dashboard. For a small business they can produce a convincing prototype in an afternoon. The harder questions are where your code and customer data end up, what the credits really cost once you keep iterating, and at what point a prototype needs a developer before real customers or real money touch it. This guide compares the three on those points using each vendor's pricing page and documentation as of October 2026. We have not run our own benchmark tests.

Short answer

All three can build a working prototype without code. Lovable suits polished web apps with a built-in backend, Bolt quick full-stack builds, and Replit apps with more custom logic. None replaces a developer for logins, payments, PDPA and backups on a live system.

Lovable vs Bolt vs Replit at a glance

Prices are in US dollars from each vendor's pricing page, checked in October 2026. All three price by usage (credits or tokens), not by what you build.

Lovable

Polished web apps

Free; Pro US$25/mo; Business US$50/mo

  • Describe the app in chat; Lovable builds front end and backend
  • Lovable Cloud: hosting, database, logins, storage and functions built in
  • Two-way Git sync with GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket on all plans
  • Credits shared across the workspace; unlimited members

Best for: Client portals, booking and form-based apps.

Bolt

Fast full-stack builds

Free; Pro US$18/mo yearly; Teams US$27/member/mo yearly

  • Token-based: 1M tokens a month free, 10M on Pro with rollover
  • Built-in database per project, or connect your own Supabase
  • Download the project as a zip to run elsewhere
  • Own domain on Pro

Best for: Prototypes and simple internal tools.

Replit

More control over code

Core US$20/mo (US$18 yearly); Pro US$100/mo (US$90 yearly)

  • Replit Agent builds and runs the app in a cloud workspace
  • Separate development and production databases
  • Pro adds database rollback up to 28 days and up to 15 collaborators
  • A full code editor when you or a developer need to step in

Best for: Apps with custom logic or integrations a developer will extend.

How the credit and token pricing really works

The monthly price buys a usage allowance. Each change you ask for uses some of it, and bigger changes use more. That makes cost depend on how much you iterate.

ToolUnitFree allowanceWhat to watch
LovableCredits (100 a month on Pro and Business)5 build credits a day, up to 30 a monthMonthly credits expire two months after issue; hosting and in-app AI also draw on credits
BoltAI tokens (10M a month on Pro)1M tokens a monthDaily limits on Free; unused Pro tokens roll over
ReplitUsage credit (US$20 on Core, US$100 on Pro)Free Mode chat with limitsEffort-based pricing: complex agent tasks cost more

Lovable's FAQ says plan mode costs 1 credit per message while default mode varies with task complexity, and that credits are not refundable. Its higher Business price adds team features such as SSO and role-based access; the cost of running an app is the same on Pro and Business. Replit's pricing page notes that the agent is powered by large language models and "may occasionally make mistakes", which applies to all three.

A prototype budget is not a running budget: building a first version may take a month of credits, while running it adds hosting, database and in-app AI usage, and every later change uses credits again.

Where your code and customer data live

This is the question most owners skip, and the one that matters most if the app holds customer data.

  • Lovable: its Git sync documentation says project code is stored inside Lovable by default, and Git sync keeps a copy in your own GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket repository with two-way sync. Lovable Cloud hosts the database, or you can connect a Supabase project you own. Lovable's FAQ says you own your code and the customer data stored in Lovable.
  • Bolt: Bolt's help centre says you can download the project as a zip and run it with Node.js. Each project can have a built-in database, and advanced settings let you connect Supabase instead or claim the database into your own Supabase account.
  • Replit: Replit's docs describe a development database and a separate production database for the published app. Code lives in your Replit workspace and can be connected to Git.

Whichever you pick, make sure the database and code repository are in accounts your business owns, with MFA, not a freelancer's or an employee's personal account.

Where a prototype needs a developer

AI builders are good at screens, forms and simple data. The risks sit in the parts that are invisible in a demo. Our guide to vibe-coded apps and business risks covers them in more depth.

AreaWhat can go wrongWhat a developer checks
Logins and rolesUsers see other customers' records; admin pages left openAccess rules on every query, not just hidden buttons
PaymentsPrices changeable in the browser; webhooks not verifiedServer-side pricing, Stripe or HitPay webhook signatures
Personal data (PDPA)Data stored overseas without notice; no deletion processData location, retention, access logs, privacy notice
BackupsNo restore point if the AI breaks the databaseScheduled off-site backups and a tested restore
SecretsAPI keys in front-end codeKeys kept server-side and rotated
MaintenanceNobody understands the code six months laterReadable code in your repository, short handover notes

How to run your own 30-minute test

Published comparisons are a starting point; your own app idea is the real test. Try the free tiers side by side.

  1. Write one short brief

Three screens and one rule, for example: a customer books a slot, staff see a list, a booking cannot overlap another.

  2. Give the same brief to all three

Paste it into Lovable, Bolt and Replit and let each build a first version.

  3. Test the rule, not just the look

Try to double-book. Log in as two users and check one cannot see the other's data.

  4. Ask for one change

"Add a cancellation reason field". Note how many credits or tokens it used and whether anything else broke.

  5. Export or sync the code

Check you can get the code into your own repository or as a download.

When a custom build pays back

AI builders are the right call for prototypes, one-off internal tools and testing whether an idea works. A custom build makes more sense when the app becomes part of how the business runs.

AI builder is enough if

  • Only staff use it and the data is not sensitive
  • You are testing an idea before spending more
  • Someone on the team enjoys iterating with prompts
  • Downtime for a day would be an inconvenience, not a loss

Get a developer-built app if

  • Customers log in or pay through it
  • It connects to Xero, Shopify, WhatsApp or your bank
  • It holds personal data covered by PDPA
  • Several modules must share one database and stay reliable

Do it yourself or get help?

Use an AI builder to sketch your idea and show staff or customers what you mean; that alone makes any later quote more accurate. When the prototype needs real logins, payments or customer data, hand it to a developer, either to harden it or to rebuild it properly.

IT Sorted is a Singapore-based team of developers with over 10 years of experience. A Custom Tool or Dashboard starts from S$1,990 for one focused tool, and a Custom Business App starts from S$4,900 for several modules sharing one database, connected to tools such as Xero, Shopify, Stripe or WhatsApp. Both come with a free written scope and fixed quote, are hosted in your own account, and the code and data are yours.

Frequently asked questions

For prototypes and simple internal tools, often yes. For a live business system with customer logins, payments, personal data or integrations, not on their own. The tools generate working code quickly, but someone still needs to check access rules, payment handling, data protection, backups and long-term maintenance before real customers rely on it.

As of October 2026, Lovable has a free plan with 5 build credits a day up to 30 a month, Pro at US$25 a month and Business at US$50 a month, each with 100 monthly credits, on monthly billing. Credits are shared across the workspace with unlimited members. Hosting and AI features inside your app also use credits.

Lovable's FAQ says you own your code, projects and the customer data stored in Lovable, and it offers Git sync to your own repository. Bolt lets you download the project as a zip. Replit keeps code in your workspace. Always check each tool's current terms and keep a copy in a repository your business controls.

Lovable Cloud and Bolt's built-in database host data on the vendor's infrastructure, and both let you use a Supabase project you own instead. Check the hosting region and add it to your privacy notice, since Singapore's PDPA requires care when personal data is transferred overseas.

It depends on the job. Lovable suits polished, form-based web apps such as portals and booking tools. Bolt suits quick prototypes with a choice of database. Replit suits apps that need custom logic and a developer to extend them later. Test the same short brief on each free tier before committing.
