Card fees: domestic, international and currency conversion

A Singapore-issued Visa or Mastercard charged in SGD costs 3.4% + S$0.50. A card issued overseas adds 0.5 percentage points. If you charge in a currency that is not your payout currency, Stripe adds 2% for conversion; its currency documentation explains how settlement currency works.

These surcharges stack. An overseas customer paying in US dollars into an SGD-only Stripe account can cost 3.4% + 0.5% + 2% = 5.9% + S$0.50. If many customers pay in USD, ask your bank about a USD account and whether settling in USD is cheaper than converting every payment. Stripe lists a separate 1% fee (minimum US$5) for paying out USD to a local bank account, so compare both options.

PayNow on Stripe: cheaper, with a few catches

PayNow costs 1.3% with no fixed fee. On a S$50 order that is S$0.65, against S$2.20 for a domestic card. For local customers, offering PayNow next to cards is the simplest way to lower your average fee.

Stripe's PayNow documentation lists the practical limits:

  • QR codes expire one hour after they are generated.
  • Customers see Stripe's company name in their banking app, not yours, because custom statement descriptors are not supported.
  • PayNow cannot be charged automatically on subscriptions or invoices; the customer must pay each one.
  • Refunds are possible up to 90 days after the payment.
  • There is no chargeback process for PayNow, because the customer authenticates in their own banking app.
  • Funds are available in your Stripe balance one day after the payment.

If most of your customers pay by PayNow, compare Stripe with HitPay before choosing. Our HitPay vs Stripe guide works through both sets of fees, and our guide to accepting PayNow on your website covers the set-up options.

Worked examples: what Stripe charges per order

Approximate fees on standard pricing, October 2026, before any GST Stripe may charge on its fees. Rounded to the cent.

PaymentStripe feeYou receive
S$20 domestic cardS$1.18S$18.82
S$50 domestic cardS$2.20S$47.80
S$50 PayNowS$0.65S$49.35
S$200 domestic cardS$7.30S$192.70
S$200 PayNowS$2.60S$197.40
S$200 international card, charged in SGDS$8.30S$191.70
S$50 monthly card subscription (with Billing)S$2.55S$47.45

The fixed S$0.50 hurts small card payments most: on a S$20 order the effective rate is almost 6%. If you sell many low-value items, encourage PayNow or set a minimum order value for card payments.

Disputes, refunds and other fees

When a customer disputes a card payment, Stripe charges S$15 for the dispute received. If you counter it manually, another S$15 applies, which Stripe returns if you win. Stripe also offers Smart Disputes, which prepares evidence for you and charges 30% of the disputed amount on disputes you win. Our Stripe disputes guide explains how to respond.

Refunds have no extra fee for cards and wallets on standard pricing, but the original processing fee and any conversion fee are not returned. A S$200 card sale refunded in full still costs you S$7.30.

How to keep Stripe fees down

  1. Turn on PayNow for local customers

At 1.3% with no fixed fee, it is the cheapest method on Stripe for almost every order size.

  2. Charge in SGD unless you have a reason not to

This avoids the 2% conversion fee on overseas cards.

  3. Avoid tiny card payments

The S$0.50 fixed fee makes small card orders expensive. Bundle items or set a card minimum.

  4. Only switch on the add-ons you use

Billing, Invoicing and Tax each add a percentage. A simple monthly fee may not need Billing if payment links are enough.

  5. Cut disputes at the source

Use a clear statement descriptor, send receipts, and publish refund terms. Each dispute costs at least S$15 even if you win.

  6. Ask about custom pricing when volume grows

Stripe offers volume discounts and IC+ pricing to larger businesses.

For subscriptions, our Stripe subscription billing guide explains when Billing's 0.7% is worth paying.
